Studio Skills: CLAY
Studio Skills: CLAY
What is it?
Where did it come from? Where can I get it from?
What does low fire, mid fire, high fire mean?
And what in the hell is a cone?
Greenware? Leatherhard? Bisqueware?
You recently caught the love bug and all you can think about is clay. But this new lover is mysterious and you need some help to figure them out. No fancy words. Not too much science talk. You just want me to give it to you plain and simple.
Let’s hang out in my studio for a pot or two of tea and I’ll try to give you a very basic 411 on your new lover. This is by no means a comprehensive guide but it should be enough to get you feeling a little more confident. I’m no expert, but I’ve been chasing the same lover as you for about 10 years now. And I’ve probably got a few things I could share.
What will the session cover?
A very basic intro to where clay comes from and the best way to get your hands on some
Low fire, mid fire, high fire clays
What are cones and how to read labels to match clay and glazes together
Terminology for the stages of clay before it becomes ceramic eg greenware, leather hard, bone dry, bisqueware
The clays I keep using in my studio and why
What will you leave with?
More confidence when choosing clay for your next project
A better understanding of the ceramic process
A workbook with some of the basics that we covered in the session for you to refer back to
Plus! We will have time for some Q&A’s and group discussions.
