An exploration in form, colour and texture..

After moving into my new studio at the start of 2024 I felt a pull to explore forms without really thinking about their function. I spend so much of my studio time focusing on making objects that work really well. But I wanted some time to think outside of that sphere. So I picked up a couple of bags of South Australian Terracotta from Bennett’s Pottery over in Magill and set out to explore freely. The resulting works are bold. They reference traditional forms while making use of this hyperlocal clay, juxtaposed with bright pops of commercially produced colour. Some of the forms have been pushed to their structural limit. Many of the forms appear as though they’ve been pulled from an archaeological dig and then been flung with paint - perhaps a nod to Ai Wei Wei’s Coloured Vases.

This series of works were all precursors to the piece that would go on to win the Fleurieu Art Prize in mid-2024. Without the creative play that took place throughout these works I do not believe that the final work would have been made, nor would it have been so successful in conveying what I wanted it to.
